Durability modelling of honeycomb textile composites for energy absorption applications

The energy absorption behaviour of honeycomb textile composites under multi-impact conditions. Paper presented to the 84th Textile Institute Annual World Conference, Raleigh, NC, March 2005. Many police officers have complained that the limb protector as shown in Fig. 1, which uses high tensile strength thermal plastic as the outside cover while the inside is moulded with foam, is inadequate to protect them from injury in a public order situation. Honeycomb structures can be used in-plane X direction loading for its ability to absorb shocks. Previous in-plane numerical simulations are based on metallic honeycombs with quasi-static compression which cannot be applied to a riot situation in which many hand-thrown and hand-held objects are used to attack policemen. Systematic research work has been carried out in the University of Manchester to develop a new material for personal protective equipment (PPE) with better protection.
