Many of the visitors to ITMA knew about the new IKME (International Knitting Machinery Exhibition). There was a close relationship between the two, the majority of the exhibitors at IKME being past ITMA participants. It was very much the same flat knitting section. The inauguration IKME was held on October 16-20 2003 at the Fiera Milano. The Exhibition occupied Halls 5 to 7 of the fair ground. Flat knitting machines are the wonder machines in knitting. Many previously unthinkable items were produced and displayed by the flat knitting machine builders, thanks to the advance in computing and electronic technology. In my view, the most significant features enhancing the capabilities of flat knitting machines are the possibility of all-needles selection and the introduction of sinkers since the mechanical machine era. The advantageous features had been exploited to the full in the past decades.
