The Textiles High Level Group, which met for the first time in Brussels at the initiative of the European Commission, on March 5, will develop recommendations on measures to improve competitiveness in the European textile and clothing industry. Participants in the first meeting of the group included three European Commissioners: Erkki Liikanen (Enterprise & Information Society), Pascal Lamy (Trade), and Philippe Busquin (Research), Ministers from four EU Member States: Nicole Fontaine (France), Antonio Marzano (Italy), Georg W. Adamowitsch (Germany) and Maria Ventura (Portugal), Concepcion Ferrer, Member of the European Parliament, and representatives from industry, retailers, distributors, European trade associations, trade unions and local textile and doming associations. The Group will develop recommendations on how to implement industrial and trade policies in the enlarged EU textile and clothing sector. The recommendations are likely to cover major issues crucial to the sector's competitiveness such as research and innovation, education, training and employment, trade policy, protection of intellectual property rights, labelling and industrial cooperation. An interim report is to appear in the early summer.
