In electrospinning, polymer fibres of submicron-scale diameter are formed by subjecting a fluid jet to a high electric field. An experimental investigation of the diameter variations of electrospun PAN nanofibres is reported on. The experiments show the diameter of the jet to depend closely on the surface charge density. Paper presented to the 83rd World Conference of the Textile Institute Electrospinning is a novel process for forming fibres with submicron-scale diameter through the action of electrostatic forces. The small fibre diameters and the porous structure of electrospinning fabrics result in a high specific surface area that is beneficial in a wide variety of applications. Proposed uses of electrospun fibres include filters, membranes, wound dressing, vascular grafts and tissue engineering scaffolds (Kim, 1999; Buchko, 1999; Gibson, 1999; Graham, 2002). The first reference to the electrospinning process dates back to 1934. To date over 30 synthetic or natural polymers have been electrospun, with research interest focusing primarily on structure and morphology of electrospun fibres (Bunyan, 2002; Jun, 2002; Griner, 2002; Sian, 2003). There have also been studies on the transport and permeability properties of electrospun nonwoven textiles.
