Peter Mandelson, the European Union's new trade commissioner, said the European Union is ready to safeguard its textiles industry if there is a surge in cheap trade from China after global import quotas are lifted in January. Visiting WTO headquarters in Geneva for the first time he said, "We are putting in place a system for monitoring textile clothing imports into the EU for the products to be liberalised. We shall use all the instruments at our disposal if action is needed. China urged Europe in October to avoid imposing barriers on imports that would hit Chinese textiles. Mandelson, however ruled out any attempt to block the phasing-out of textile quota. "I noted some calls for this but I do not support these calls," he said.
