In the 52 years of ITMA's history 13 exhibitions have been held, and the number of exhibitors and the exhibition space steadily increased until the 1991 show in Hanover, when the show covered a record 185,543 m~2. ITMA has since been on the decline, to 158,000 m~2 in 1999. Regulations about admissible exhibits also have been relaxed, and the exhibits' quality has deteriorated in consequence. Since the Gulf War in 1991 security has become a problem; this year SARS also has impinged on the economy and societies of the Far East. Now therefore ITMA must cease to chase after gigan-tism, pricing policies and the selection of venues must reflect a pragmatic approach, and the show must become more market-oriented. Relations between organisers and exhibitors must meanwhile be harmonious, with the latter being treated politely by the former. Fairground rules and regulations should never be changed suddenly, as the traditional exhibitors treat ITMA every four years as a temporary working station.
