摘要

The textile industry in China is a traditional one with a long I history, and has witnessed sustained high-speed growth ever since the 1980s. It comprises textile, apparel, manmade fibre and textile machinery manufacturing sectors. By the year 2002, the fibres directly used in the industry approached to 17.5m t, with 18m people in employed. In the progress of our agriculture-based nation being industrialised, the textile industry has played a very important role in meeting the evergrowing demand from one-fifth of the world's population for fibre, in promoting urban and rural employment and agricultural growth, and in facilitating international trade and realising an equilibrium between international income and expenditure, as well as in sustaining the growth of our national economy. The development of the textile industry in China is driven mainly by our growing domestic consumption, and by our market-oriented reform and open policy.
