Arecent Hong Kong seminar organised jointly by Cotton Council International and Cotton Incorporated provided a presentation of trends for the Spring/Summer 2005 season, and insights into developments in cotton consumption. Noted Mabel Teo in her introduction, the Spring/Summer trends had been shown in Bangkok, Manila and Singapore at various seminars, and on each occasion attendees had asked about the cotton price. The rise in the price of cotton per pound, in one week, had been US 20 cents, and in one day 490,000 bales had been sold to China. Reasons for the unprecedented trading conditions included the drought in Australia, and it was believed that the shortage (and consequently high price) would continue until June 2004.
