The design of a typical Chinese scouring line causes a number of problems that put the Chinese scourer at a disadvantage compared to the Australian sourer. First, he is unable to run the scour continuously - the efficiency of operation being less than 70% as against more than 90% in Aus- tralia. Second, the mechanical technology involved in the scouring line limits the capacity to produce an even mat of wool flow. Third, a wet feed hopper is needed to prepare the wool for drying owing to the unevenness of the wool mat. Fourth, the combined length of the bowls is considerably more than the Australian scours. Fifth, the relative amounts of pollution being discharged are greater owing to the lack of dirt and effective wool wax recovery systems. Sixth, the variation in volume and strength of the discharges causes problems in the effluent treatment system. In terms of scouring performance there was little difference between the Chinese and the Australian mills. However there was a large difference in the topmaking performance of the wools scoured at the mills. The differences in either the mean fibre length (Hauteur) or the amount of noil generate (Romaine) could have major economic consequences.
