'One of the most fascinating things about the world of fashion is that practically no one knows who inhabits it or why it exists. There are a few people who know how it works, but they won't tell'.~1Here, American designer and fashion industry critic Elizabeth Hawes (1903-1971) aptly described fashion's ambiguous, multi-layered nature and its liminal position between reality and myth. These ideas lie presently at the centre of fashion research and were a key starting point for the Fashion Research Network (FRN), a group established in early 2013 by four PhD students from the Courtauld Institute of Art (CIA) and Royal College of Art (RCA), including the two authors of this report.
