Anthony Cooke's new book is a welcome addition to the literature on the Scottish cotton industry and long overdue. The industry in Scotland has been the subject of historical inquiry over the last few decades but none of the published works have attempted to provide a comprehensive account from the beginnings in the eighteenth century to the collapse in the later decades of the nineteenth century. Also, for the first time, we have detailed information on the men who built 'king cotton', their social positions, invariably well-to-do, their education, invariably practical, and their religion, invariably Presbyterian, although outside the established Church.
