India's focus should be Man Made Fibre based Textile (MMF): India is the 2nd largest producer, consumer, exporter of cotton and with the largest sown area of cotton; we have the potential to emerge as the world leader in cotton fabric export. The net sown area for cotton has seen an increase of around 4.5% (CAGR) in the last 5 years and currently stands at 12 million hectare. But, these numbers should be taken with a pinch of salt as despite producing 1/5th of global cotton production, India ranks 24th in cotton productivity. There is a need to boost Research and Development of seeds, chemicals and improvement in irrigation facilities as 65% of our cotton crops are dependent on rains.
