The 8th Asian Textile Conference was organised by CITI on 22nd and 23rd of September, 2014 in Mumbai. The conference had business sessions and panel discussions on critical issues, like emerging trends in textile fibres, innovation and capacity building, international trade and emerging trends of fashion and retailing in the apparel sector. The conference was inaugurated by Mr Sujit Gulati, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles and the Guest of honour was Ms Kiran Soni Gupta, Textile Commissioner, Government of India. Mr Raju Chandran, Managing Editor, Textile India Progress mentioned that India's standalone textile mills should go ahead with forward integration, by installing latest generation processing machines. This, he said would enable India to attain a Textile and Apparel Output of USS 350 Billion from current USS 110 Billion. Mr Raju Chandran pointed out that Banks exposure to Indian Textile and Apparel Industry is Rs 2,50,000 crore and 75% of this exposure is in the spinning sector. He asserted that this should be reversed to 75% in processing and 25% in spinning mills should go to for value addition in textiles. Government of India, Ministry of Textiles, must come out with Innovative Strategies to overcome current problems in the Indian Textile and Apparel Industry. Mr Raju Chandran, who met Mr Santosh Kumar Gangwar on 12th September, 2014, is now awaiting appointment with His Excellency, Mr Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. Mr Chandran has in the meanwhile, made on 11th November, 2014, a presentation to Mr Narendra Modi Honourable Prime Minister of India, which is published in this issue.
