Along the silk road in the Middle Ages luxurious silk fabrics reached the strategically well located city of Lyon, where, in the trading of this expensive material, it was dispatched throughout flamboyant France ad even as far as the royal palace. On the grounds of the palace's high level of expenditure on the desirable silk, Louis XI decided in 1466 to produce silk himself in France for the future. In this way Lyon was honoured with the silk trade monopoly in 1536 as the "Silk Capital" of France.
