India perhaps has had the longest continuous history of decorating fabrics with dyes. Indian dyed and printed fabrics were marketed throughout the world and have had great influence on both the economy and the aesthetics of many countries. No country other than India has had an impact on the history of dye-decorated fabrics. India has mastered the art of dyeing and printing with natural colours when this was perhaps unknown elsewhere. There are number of traditional textile clusters known for their unique products dyed and printed with natural dyes but industrialization and introduction of synthetic dyes in the last century compelled these clusters to either switch over from natural to synthetic dyes for survival or take a back seat.
