Measuring Yarn/Package Frictio During Over-End Unwinding

摘要

The magnitude and unforomity of withdrawal tension druing over-end unwinding depends on the coefficient of friction beteen the yarn and package. Current friction measurement techniques do not have the high speed and package surface roughness characteristics of yarn-package firiction. This research develops a new measruement technique for yarn-package friction that used simultaneously captured tension data and images of the yarn slidingonthepackage surface during actaul unwinding. An algorithm combines a mathematical model of the sliding motion with experimental data to produce estimates of the yarn/package coefficient of friction. Parkages of equivalent denier, textured and fully drawn polyester yarns are tested with a mesurement uncertainty of less than 10. The coefficients of firiction increase from 0.40 to 0.48 and 0.23 to 0.35 over the speed range of 500 to 1000 m/min for the testured and fully drawn yarns, respectively. A simpler measurement method with an Instron tensile tester can be used for comparative coefficient of friction measurements, but it provides quantitative ageement with the in-situ measurements only at low tension.
