Traditional imports of raw jute of Bangladesh origin :o India in both official and unofficial routes this season have nosedived to two lakh bales or so from six or seven lakh bales annually following acute shortage in availability in fibre in that country. It is understood that production of raw jute in Bangladesh this year has sharply declined to below 3.5 lakh bales from normal size of 4.2 lakh bales, leading to a sharp rise in raw jute prices to over Rs. 1,500 per quintal for grade equivalent to TD-4 in India. In India, the price of TD-4 grade of raw jute is now quoted around little over Rs. 1,400 per quintal.
