Until well into the twentieth century, cathedralncloses did not receive the attention from archi-ntectural historians that they deserved. Perhapsnwould-be investigators were deterred by thenforbiddingly private nature of cathedral pre-ncincts, many of which are still surrounded bynhigh walls, some locked up at night.
