Back in the 1990s, while at a SEMA conference in the US, I heard that Ford had been censured by the Californian authorities because it planned to use on-board diagnostics to communicate that a non-OE part had been fitted to a car. This was made possible because a small manufacturing asymmetry had been designed into a rotating part.The tolerances were such that the asymmetry was difficult to reverse engineer into a copy part. The plan was that non-OE parts would transmit a signal of non-compliance to Ford under Californian EPA restrictions.To me this was unbelievable futuristic stuff - by today's standards, it was telematics in its infancy.
