For many years now we've worried about mobile phones distracting drivers, yet today the marketing peopLe are telling car development engineers that driving is distracting people from their phones! So, now we see'connected cars'whereby mobile devices and internet access is available in-car, so we have internet radio, our phone contacts and calL handing, and even Facebook friends available whilst we drive. With Head-Up Displays using augmented reality we may soon seethe image of one of the driver's Facebook friends being projected onto the windscreen as they pass each other on the roads; this just requires enable location'on the phones of both people. There is a delicate balance between offering consumers the 'services and connectivity they demand'and safety. Applications that can detect changes to driver input, caused by fatigue, and suggest the driver takes a break at the next service station, even offering a discounted cup of coffee, are already available and a great use of connected and GPS technology.
