The sophisticated multi-material,ASF (Audi Space Frame) construction of the new Audi R8 features significant carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) for the first time. Components made from CFRP form the B posts, the centre tunnel and the rear bulkhead accounting for 13% of its composition. The front end, the roof arch and the rear end are assembled from cast aluminium nodes and aluminum profiles which, in some cases, employ new alloys. CFRP fits in very well with the Audi lightweight design. The material-specific advantages of CFRP are significant, particularly its weight to rigidity and strength ratios. For the first time,Audi is using in the new R8 vehicle structure Audi CFRP components made by using the efficient RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding) process. All of this potentially points towards Audi using increased CFRP materials across its range of vehicles in the future.
