The recalls include cars fitted with 1.2-litre, 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre EA189 EU5 diesel engines -engines that are compliant with Euro 5 emissions regulations. These also include Audi, Skoda and SEAT models fitted with the same engines. It has been reported that engine software fitted to some Volkswagen diesel cars allowed them to cheat engine emissions tests in the US. The software was capable of detecting when a car was being tested for emissions and subsequently temporarily reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) being put out. Once the test was over, the car reverted to normal and its NOx emissions went back up.
