Looking at the need to balance increased performance and the driving experience with weight saving and cost containment, he said using aluminium can provide a potential 20-45% weight saving over commonly used steel, but is more expensive. While magnesium can provide a similar weight saving, it has inherent corrosion problems. These are the balances you have to make as a vehicle designer and manufacturer,' he said.
