The opening meeting of the new year for the London Region was a very interesting and informative presentation from Dave Tempest, Managing Director of TEXA UK Ltd, an Italian company that has its UK base in Lancashire. This is an innovative company that has grown rapidly in its 30 year history, developing systems and ideas for the motor industry. The main focus of Dave's lecture was the EU legislation regarding air-conditioning refrigerant and its impact on the environment and its global warming potential or GWP. From 1 January 2011, newly type approved cars and light commercial vehicles in European markets that are equipped with air-conditioning or climate control systems are required to use a refrigerant which meets the 2006/40/CE legislation. A new refrigerant, HFO-1234yf, will replace the current refrigerant R134a in these newly type approved applications. The three key points of the 2006/40/ CE legislation are the refrigerant currently used in automotive applications must be replaced with a refrigerant with a GWP of less than 150; from 1 January 2011 any newly type approved vehicle must use a refrigerant that meets this criteria, and all vehicles manufactured from 1 January 2017 must use a refrigerant that meets the criteria in point 1.
