The Icom and Sporty's portable ra-dios are worthy for use as primary ra dios, but add up the labor and parts needed to install an external antenna system and it's worth considering a standalone comm transceiver. You'll need an electrical system that can produce enough juice to run it, of course, but for a Super Cub or something similar, there are two panel-mounted rigs that stand out for electrical efficiency, features and value. First, Garmin's GTR 200B PMA.
