Aluminium canstock manufacturer Novelis reacted strongly to the result of a London court hearing that will delay reforms intended to cut the price of aluminium. The London Metal Exchange (LME) had proposed that from 1 April its affiliated warehouses would be required to ship out more metal than they take in if waiting times exceeded 50 days. Waiting times incurred rental costs that added to the price of the metal. Novelis says the rental costs have been a windfall for producers. Producers have created "an artificial global shortage and driven spot premiums to ridiculously high levels", said chief executive Phil Martens.
