Although a food can represents an extremely cost-effective package, it has recently suffered from an unfashionable image, with the industry failing to embrace sophisticated decorative techniques seen in the beverage segment. However, sterilisation equipment supplier JBT FoodTech is attempting to change this image with a development to its 93-year-old continuous rotary pressure retort that makes it compatible with double necked-in cans decorated with shrink sleeves, rather than paper labels. "More than 100 billion food cans are estimated to be produced globally every year to pack a broad range of products, including ready meals, vegetables, soups and sauces," says Bart Mertens, sales and marketing manager EMEA at JBT FoodTech. "Food cans are highly cost-effective, easy to recycle and very safe, but have an old-fashioned image."
