Construction has started on Kenya's first two-piece D&I canmaking plant at Sultan Hamud, in Makueni County south east of the capital Nairobi. The plant, which when production starts later this year will supply drinks companies such as East African Breweries and Coca-Cola with aluminium cans, represents a US$99 million investment by GZ Industries, which in 2010 constructed Nigeria's first beverage can plant and is building a second there. Initial capacity on start up of the plant in Kenya will be 1.2 billion cans a year from one manufacturing line, which will be doubled up to 2.4 billion as demand increases.
