Automation in the production of tooling at one of Rexam's beverage can plants in the UK has cut the volume of tools made even though the manufacturing lines are running at record levels. The tooling department at the plant at Milton Keynes - which has three lines making five million aluminium cans a day - once had to make 30 ironing die sets to provide the 20 needed every day to keep the lines running. rnMore than 30 percent of the die sets rnwere below the required dimensional precision necessary for keeping the body-makers running efficiently without tear offs.
