The much-predicted multiplication of television channels is finally happening across the world. Our first story looks at Europe, and the implications of this for Hollywood; the second (see next page) at a TV deal in Latin America. Over the next year or so Europe's television viewers will be deluged with an unprecedented choice of new channels, thanks to the advent of digital compression and the ambitions of the continent's media companies. Unlike most existing European broadcasters, most of these newcomers want viewers to pay to watch. Their search for something alluring to fill their screens confronts Hollywood's studios with hard choices in their richest foreign market.
