An international treaty to halt the spread of invasive species in ships' ballast water will enter into force in September 2017. The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM convention) needed ratification from enough countries so that 35% of the gross tonnage of the world's merchant fleet would be represented. It reached this target when Finland acceded on 8 September. Other countries that have ratified the treaty include Brazil, Russia, Canada, Iran, Germany and Spain, but not the UK or US.
