The Coalition government's attitude towards the environment over the past five years could well be summarised by the phrase 'deregulation, deregulation, deregulation' - a startlingly unambitious mantra that has continued into the battle for the next parliament. Yet it is a long way from the reality of what is needed for serious environmental protection and what is being asked for on the ground (see p 25). Readers will not be surprised to hear that the ENDS Report has always been a supporter of strong regulation. Apart from filling our pages each month, it is key to improving environmental quality and developing a strong green economy. But we are not the only voice in favour of the concept; a growing number of businesses appreciate the importance of a reliable and intelligent regulatory framework and are not afraid to say so.
