The environment department (DEFRA) has announced the 12 winning nature improvement areas (NIAs) in England that will share £7.5m in 2012-15. The winners were chosen from 76 bids for the funding in a competition that began last summer (ENDS Report 438, p 7). NIAs are partnerships of councils, NGOs, farmers and others, set up to coordinate environmental improvements over large areas. This strategic planning for nature will allow scarce resources to be spent more effectively. The aim of NIAs is to improve and expand existing wildlife sites, to create new ones and better connect them with wildlife corridors.
