While electric company executives told a conference here Monday that greater consolidation was the only way the industry could tackle its growing financial challenges, the Iberdrola-Energy East merger took an arrow from an administrative law judge with the New York Public Service Commission.rnSpeakers at the annual conference of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the trade association representing investor-owned utilities, said that electric companies must get bigger and financially stronger to keep up with soaring costs for fuel, labor and material-and the need to spend staggering amounts of money on new plants and power lines.
