An oasis is a specific landscape that exists with deserts in arid regions, which is not only the most concentrated area of human activities in arid region but also the largest area where artificial disturbances happen at the regional scale. In China, oases are mainly distributed in the deserts and Gobi between the Helanshan-Wuqiaoling Mountains and western frontier of China. Although they take up only 4-5% of the total area of the region, over 90% of the population and over 95% of social wealth (e.g., farming products and rich in natural resources) are concentrated within the oases (Han 2001). A long history of increases in population pressure in China has caused agricultural land use to expand and intensity.rnThe Jinta Oasis (98°39'-99°08'E, 39°56'-40°17'N), with a total area of 1,652.2 km~2, is a very typical artificial and agricultural oasis in dryland region of China, which is set as one of the national land resource developing and representative areas in China owing to the continuous and easy reclamation of oasis soil (Chen 2000). Because the population is increasingly growing in this oasis (Fig. 1), the agricultural landscape and environment have obviously changed. The effects on oasis agriculture under population pressure mainly have the following aspects.
