I caught up with Motoko Ishii at the Kempinski Hotel in Berlin, the morning after her mesmerising light and music performance at the Brandenburg Gate (see page 47) to commemorate the 150-year special relationship between Germany and Japan. She was accompanied by her daughter, Akarki-Lisa Ishii, who runs the Paris office of Motoko Ishii Lighting Design and who worked with her on the Berlin project. I'm not one of those people that gets 'star-struck' but I had to admit I had butterflies. When I first started working as a lighting designer in the 1990s, it was Motoko's work I remember most vividly -and she was described as lighting royalty'.
