Even the Lighting Design Awards are not recession-proof - and there are strong indications that this was not a vintage year for either lighting schemes or product innovations. Certainly the crop of entries in the Product Innovations section (in which I was a judge) was thinner and less inspiring than usual - although one or two manufacturers could have fared much better with some excellent luminaires, if they had bothered to send in working samples. In this day and age, judges cannot base their decisions purely on company literature. Perhaps next year this ought to be made a condition of entry (with the possible exception of control systems).
