The last 30 years have seen considerable research and development effort on remote source electric and daylight lighting systems. It is fitting that the first book~* on the subject should be written by Julian Aizenburg who, together with Gennadiv Bukhman, has a justifiable claim to be the driving force behind modern interest in the technology.rnThe idea of guiding light into building interiors is over one hundred years old. The first applications were to direct light from the then new technology of electric arc lamps into hazardous areas of gunpowder factories and mines. The book contains some wonderful illustrations of these pieces of 1880s engineering. The technology then fell dormant for a century until the efforts of Aizenburg and Bukhman, who made use of contemporary developments in highly optically efficient materials.
