Sadly, I was unable to attend this year's ILE Conference in Bournemouth - the first time in about six years that I haven't been present at the ILE's premier event. However, judging from the reports, photos and papers we publish in a special 15-page section in this issue, starting on page 15, it was a worthy follow-up to last year's triumph in Bristol. One delegate's personal Diary of the three days' events is followed by Chris Hardy's Presidential Address (p. 19) and two excellent papers delivered during the technical sessions - an unusual report of street lighting used as criminal evidence, which won Best Regional Paper award (p.27) and a stimulating look at the issue of mesopic vision, energy efficiency and LEDs (p. 22), the implications of which could transform public lighting in the next few years.
