Switching off lighting has become a short term fix for many authorities with which to meet their challenging target for carbon and energy reduction. However there are many wider implications to switching off lighting, and although these 'experiments' are never entered into lightly, authorities should be prepared to reconsider some of their decisions.rnFor example, the Highways Agency has started these 'switch-off' trials on a number of motorways and trunk roads around the country, which it has explained away with the following statement 'Switching off lighting in the early hours supports the government's climate change objectives, and will not only reduce light pollution within the rural landscape, but also could see network operational energy usage and CO2 emissions cut by around 40%, reducing our operational carbon footprint.'
