One of the most crucial factors in enabling business growth is the quality of a country's infrastructure. Yet it is clear to anyone who has travelled widely over the past few years that the UK has fallen behind other countries in the quality of its transport system, and it will fall further behind unless the issue of capacity is urgently dealt with. Readers of The Log will be well aware of how the capacity issue will impact on the future of aviation, and it is similar for the rail network. Even today it can often be standing room only on many lines, and with key parts of the network such as the West Coast Main Line expected to reach full capacity within 20 years, congestion on British rail lines will worsen. A radical solution is required and that is why we have been long-time supporters of high speed rail, welcoming the recent announcement that the Government will support extending high speed rail as far north as Manchester and Leeds.
