Laser attacks are an alarmingly increasing problem requiring a multifaceted resolution, says David Reynolds, BALPA Flight Safety and Security Officer.The number of events where lasers are targeted at aircraft in the UK and globally is increasing year on year. In 2009 some 742 of these were reported in the UK and in 2010 there were 1,786 (UK CAA). According to ICAO figures there were an average of 12 attacks a day in 2010 globally and it is forecast to get a lot worse.
