While levander's focus is often on long-term developments, his Blue Ocean team also has a track record of developing concepts that resonate with current industry trends. Last year for example, it proposed a design for an LNG-fuelled cruiseship - shortly before Carnival Corp ordered four LNG-fuelled vessels for two of its cruise brands. The most recent Blue Ocean concept is the 'lean ro-ro', which aims to use new technology and construction principles to create a vessel with competitive capex and opex. Crew could consist of just having one person on the bridge at all times, with three personnel in rotating shifts, thanks to automatic lookout and decision support combining radar, camera, infrared camera, light detection and ranging (LIOAR) and automatic identification systems (AIS).
