摘要

The lead article in The Motor Ship, June 1966, was shared between two topics. The first looked at the need to replace the Liberty Ships and other WW2-era vessels which would soon be withdrawn from service. It was noted that not all owners would necessarily want a similar vessel, but if a simple, standardised, but advanced design could be produced in sufficient numbers to achieve a low price, around US$2 million, it could be a different matter. European yards had not indicated plans for any such ship - those on offer were thought to be of too high a standard - though it was noted that British builder Austin and Pickersgill had a promising design for about £1 million with something similar from de Schelde in the Netherlands. But, worryingly, the big Japanese concerns seemed determine to produce low-cost, standard-series, ships, maybe to Western designs. The plans even included sub-contracting the smaller ships to the smaller yards, and offering finance packages as part of the deal.
