An editorial comment in the June 1965 issue of The Motor Ship referred to the "threat of Japan's shipbuilding industry". Nine European countries, including Britain and Sweden, were seeking government intervention to force a slowdown in the rapid development of the Japanese industry. The importance of Japan as a shipbuilding nation had risen rapidly, thanks to state investment in shipyards and drydocks. However, reports were suggesting that these fears may have been premature. Costs, both of labour and raw materials, were rising sharply in Japan while European owners may have reluctantly accepted a Far-Eastern built hull, and maybe a main engine, but insisted on European-built ancillary systems which impacted strongly on any cost advantage. Much of the issue, however, was devoted to in-depth studies of the commercial and technical aspects of the Southampton Castle, described as "the world's highest powered cargo liner", which had just entered service as the first of two sister ships designed for a rigorous schedule between Southampton and Cape Town. Owner British & Commonwealth Shipping insisted on total reliability as, in contrast to today's oversupply situation and slow steaming practices, there was a desire to speed up services, allowing them to be operated on a more freguent basis, with fewer ships. Southampton Castle and Good Hope Castle, with 25 knot capability and 22 knot service speed, were the culmination of that move.
