The new windshield, installed on the MOL MARVEL for testing, was designed to address wind resistance caused by the increasing height of container loads. The horseshoe shaped design on the bow encloses the front row of containers, cutting resistance while minimising weight. Oblique stacking of containers behinc the windshield also streamline the sides of the vessel, MOL noted. The company expects an annual average reduction of 2% in CO_2 emissions for a 6,700 teu containership - plying the North Pacific Ocean route at speed of 17 knots - fitted with the device. The windshield is also expected to protect ships from green water on the bow deck in bad weather.
