The 2,592-passenger (lower berths) Grand Princess recently returned to service, after the most extensive refurbishment in Princess Cruises' history, emerging from the Grand Bahama Shipyard as a rejuvenated ship. The transformation project included the removal of the nightclub from the top deck on the ship's stern - which Princess Cruises claims has significantly improved fuel efficiency by reduced weight - and the complete demolition and rebuilding of the atrium to create a new piazza. Built in 1998 by Fincantieri at their Monfalcone yard, Italy, at a cost of approximately $450 million, the 108,806gt vessel was the largest and most expensive passenger ship ever built at the time.
