Two classification societies have recently presented their view of the situation ahead. Germanischer Lloyd concentrated mainly on the fuel and emission issues, while Bureau Veritas looked at the wider financial issues. Member of the GL executive board Dr Hermann Klein told us that he acknowledges the challenging times ahead. He sees the present time as the end of a boom phase for the industry, which tends to move in five-year cycles. Ship finance is becoming more difficult, building costs are still high, thanks to the price of steel, operating costs are high too, but charter rates are volatile. However fuel remains one of the most important, and most uncertain, issues for the industry. Even though fuel prices have fallen, emissions are still a major focus.
