Rolls-Royce says that its marine reduction gearboxes have built up a good reputation for robustness, reliability and low life-cycle costs. A new range has been developed which will be progressively phased in from 2008. The basic single-input single-output technology is retained, with built-in clutch and thrustblock and a variety of power take-offs. These PTOs allow large shaft generators to be driven. Alternatively they can enable electric motors to feed power in for get-you-home propulsion or as part of a hybrid propulsion system.
