What is claimed to be the world's largest seismic research ship, the Norwegian-built Geo Celtic, relies on Vacon AFE drives for its diesel electric propulsion and other electrical systems.rnThe 100.8m ship has a diesel-electric propulsion system of 11,1 OOkVA supplied by Scandinavian Electric Systems. According to SES, this was one of the largest low-voltage diesel-electric systems to be built.rnVacon says that SES's integrated system is the only solution for certain required functions such as the blackout prevention system.rnThe Vacon AFE unit is a bidirectional (regenerative) power converter for the front end of a common DC bus drive line-up. The liquid-cooled AFE units, which use normal drinking water as coolant, have a compact construction compared with air-cooled units.
